Thoughts of the sea

As I used to be a Captain, and always had a romance with the sea, my mind frequently visits my past onboard the metal blades which easily cut through the blue water and were guided by dolphins.

My mind often daydreams and envisions life before the age of diesel, before the age of steam.

At times, I imagine myself on the quarterdeck of some clipper, plying my way to China at breakneck speed to sell my cargo and make it back to New York for a favorable return. The new sights, the adventures when onshore, the trials of working on a ship under the best and worst conditions that nature can throw at a sailor, all stir my spirit in a revelry which can only be encountered during a life at sea.

Today I write a poem by John Masefield (1878-1967) to honor him, the sea and all of those who plied their trade on the waves, for better or for worse.

SEA FEVER

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song, and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist, on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I Must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may no be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a quiet sleep and a swet dream when the long trick's over.

May Lady Luck's gales fill your sails.

An inspirational love poem

I wanted to type out a poem that I have always loved. It is by an anonymous author, possibly from the 16th century.

There is a Lady Sweet and Kind

There is a Lady sweet and kind,
Was never face so pleased my mind;
I did but see her passing by,
And yet I love her till I die.

Her gesture, motion, and her smiles,
Her wit, her voice my heart beguiles,
Beguiles my heart I know not why,
And yet I love her till I die.

Cupid is winged and doth range,
Her country so my love doth change:
But change she earth or change she sky,
Yet I will love her till I die.

You never know who fate and destiny will bring to you to give you happiness.

Life is full of wonderous surprises.

Carpe diem.

Movie Reviews

Last weekend, I had a movie fiesta with Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Bounty Hunter.

Avatar-- Wow. The visuals blew me away. I can see where the budget went. The look of it was fresh. I have never seen such a wonderful new world created on a science fiction film.

The plot was a bit simplistic, which there is nothing exactly wrong with that. Something rubbed me the wrong way about it. All of that technology that the earthlings had and yet, they held off using it, until the plot needed it to be used. Perhaps there should have been more motivation for the corporation to use it. It seemed rushed.

Clash of the Titans-- I really enjoyed it. I have the original version on DVD and the latest was quite different. On Yahoo reviews, die hard fans of the mediocre (yet charming) original were caustic in their criticism of how the story was so different. Why shouldn't it be? It is a new movie and the plot was made more intriguing than the original. If any criticism should be given about the story, it should be that Hollywood departed from the Greek myth of Perseus almost entirely.

I will end up having that on DVD as well as the original.

Bounty Hunter-- Gads. I am a huge fan of Gerard Butler in 300 (historical actions make the world go around, in my opinion), but he was lacking in this mediocre comedy with Jennifer Aniston.

Comparing the former Mrs. Brad Pitt with the current almost Mrs. Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston is not a Hollywood star, whereas Angelina-- enough said. Aniston can never be a cinematic celeb. Her acting is fair for TV comedy, but she can't pull off roles. She needs to either go back to TV or just sit back and collect royalties from friends.

Gerard needs to be more careful with his role selection or else he will be sending himself into obscurity along with Dolph Lundgren.

The next movie that I will see is the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, so I can't wait.

Carpe diem.

A challenge and a vision

I started this Blog a year ago almost and now am writing the second entry.

Since then, I have completed an editing course and have written several short stories.

One story called Vaquero is being sent to Cicada magazine. I think the story is solid and should sell.

I am going to keep this Blog as up-to-date as I can as a writing and thought journal. Feel free to comment on either.

Also, I am excited about my vision for an edeavor next year. It involves publishing. To be announced.
